How to set up 2-step verification in Google/Microsoft

The password, our primary line of online defense for so long, is ill-equipped to deal with the range of threats we face online. Added to that, the number of accounts we all manage has increased to such a degree that password management is a very real problem. Additional forms of authentication, e.g., 2FA  improve protection and mitigate password compromise.

2FA strengthens authentication because it adds another factor – something the user has (such as a one-time passcode or authenticator app) or something they are (a unique physical attribute such as a fingerprint or facial recognition) – to the something they know (usually a username and password).
